It is the crossover we hand to people driving up the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi: high enough to see over the trucks, small enough to turn round in a Stepantsminda side street, and easy to drive after a night flight into Tbilisi.
All-wheel drive and a raised stance take the gravel to Juta and the switchbacks above Gudauri in their stride. The 2.0 litre petrol engine with an automatic gearbox uses around 8.9 litres per 100 km. Five seats, three bags. It is not a low-range 4x4, so Tusheti and the Ushguli track are better left to the Pajero or the Prado.
In winter add snow chains to the booking; the road over the pass to Gudauri and Kazbegi often requires them. Unlimited mileage inside Georgia is included, and if you are heading on to Armenia the cross-border permit is a simple extra.
